Game Manual

Seeing as

  • The original Backstage game had one in the form of a README.txt and
  • Backstage doesn't control or handle much like your typical RPG Maker game
  • I shouldn't assume that your average gamer knows how the latter controls anyway
  • The in-game tutorials (tooltips) are not especially well optimized (a player apparently finished the entire game without learning that the 'Q' Key quick-item-select menu existed)
  • There are some things that aren't important enough for the game to tell the player at all, but are still things some players might like to know
  • Why the heck not?

I have created an "Instruction Booklet" type PDF game manual for Backstage: Murdered Sleep and uploaded it here and on Steam. It takes its cues from the format of the instruction booklets that used to come with the PS1 and PS2 games that Backstage is most inspired by, minus the "here is how to turn on your Playstation" filler pages, obviously. The information inside ranges from very obvious to little factoids that aren't actually told to the player by the game itself at all (like that you can't get headshots while drunk, for instance). Hopefully it will be of some use to some players! The PDF is 15 pages, I didn't go too crazy with the layout and formatting, but I think it looks fairly neat. It wasn't terribly difficult to make, either.

More to come soon!
