Spirit Of '76
A downloadable game
Spirit of '76 is a cyberpunk RPG with a healthy emphasis on the punk. (It's probably more JRPG than a western CRPG but it uniquely blends many aspects of the two genres.) In its previous sporadic incarnations (the project has existed in one form or another since roughly the year 2000 when I was 14) it's been known as Fires of Freedom, Liberty or Death, and most recently Live Free Or Die .
"Brainwashed, radicalized, born to kill, born to die
Strategize and weaponize, enemy airwaves full of lies
So here we go again
Mission: Detonation
Compliments of The New World Order
This is the new disorder"
- Anti-Flag, "Digital Blackout"
As a convict accidentally sprung from an Axis Incorporated private prison transport by the revolutionary Sons of Liberty, make your way onto the mean streets of Axis Corp-occupied Philadelphia as a razor, a hacker, a heavy, or a face. Use a blend of hacking, transhuman cybernetic enhancements, social engineering and good old fashioned violence to do crimes as a freelancer for hire. Pursue motives of profit or revolutionary fervor as you become more involved with the SOL and their fight against the corporate tyranny of Axis Inc..
It's April, 2076. Congress is expected to vote on an Axis-backed, Axis-ordered motion to repeal the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution (under which the UA still operates), removing the two-term limit on the UA Presidency. Everyone with suspicions about Axis or sympathies for the various anti-corporate movements throughout the country fears the same thing should this motion actually pass: Aleister Smythe as de facto President for Life. Ex-marine corps sniper Jay Braddock has just been recruited as his head bodyguard, and young revolutionary firebrand Patricia Hendrix will do anything to stop him, and before long your story will collide with theirs in the first battles of the New American Revolution.
What if all the jingoistic joy, ra-ra American patriotism, high-tech milspec gear-porn and big ass-explosions of the Modern Warfare branch of the Call of Duty franchise, but politically realigned and reimagined with antifascist, anti-corporate, anti-capitalist and anarchist politics/attitude and also somehow a JRPG? Spirit of '76 exists to answer that (somewhat tortured) hypothetical question!
